The past Sunday, the Wood Street Meal Project had its fifth meal distribution event. This week, I prepared orange chicken, steamed rice, and sautéed broccoli
The Day of the Distribution
For this event, it required less time then previous ones. Because of this, I started my preparations at 9 AM in order to get to downtown at 11:30 AM. To begin the morning, I prepared the rice, as it would take the longest to cook. Next, I placed my coated chicken into the convection oven, then air fried the chicken pieces until golden brown and crispy. During this time, I also prepared my orange chicken sauce on the stovetop. With the rice done cooking, and the chicken baking, I began the last part of the meal: the broccoli. To prepare the broccoli, I first blanched it in order for the broccoli to get soft. Then, I cooked the broccoli with garlic, green onion, and soy sauce so they could get better flavor. With all of the meal components ready, I finally began packing the kits into their containers, and in the end, I ended up with 30 individual meals. Since all the preparation was now completed, I headed to downtown.
When I reached downtown at 11:30, I was ready to distribute the meals. Like always, I approached people and asked if they needed something to eat, and many people were eager for the meal. Within 15 minutes, I already handed out all 30 of the meals I prepared. When I was done, I was very content, as I was able to make a positive change on many peoples' day.
What I Learned
Although the club is still not large, even the small amounts of work we put in leads to changes in the community. 30 more people did not have to worry about their next meal, and that itself is something to be proud of!
